CSV (comma-separated values), is a common format for storing and transmitting content.
Ιn most cases, before you open a CSV file in Excel, you will need to convert the file to see the data in a readable form. Once you export your report follow the steps based on your operating system:
Note: These steps are for Excel 2016 and later; they may vary depending on your Excel version. You can contact your IT team for further assistance.
- Create a new Excel file and click on Data > Get External Data > From Text
- Locate the CSV file on your device and click on Import
- Follow the steps in the text import wizard window. First, choose Delimited as the file type and set the character encoding to 65001: Unicode (UTF-8) from the dropdown list. Check the box 'My data has headers'; the first row of the CSV file has column names. Click Next to continue.
- Tick the Comma as the delimiter since commas separate our data. In the data preview section, you will notice that the data are displayed in columns now. Click next to move to the last step.
- Select the General column data format and then Finish.
- Keep the default values inside the Import Data window and click OK.
That's it! You will now be able to view and manipulate your data in Excel.
If you are a Mac user and you are not using Excel, you can easily open the CSV file directly via Google Sheets or Numbers. In case you are using MS Office for Mac, follow the steps below:
Note: These steps were done with Microsoft Excel for Mac (version 16.63.1)
- Click on Data > Get Data (Power Query)
-
Click on Text/CSV as the data source
- Locate and select your CSV file and click Next
- Choose Comma as the delimiter and then click Load
That's it! You will now be able to view and manipulate your data in Excel.
