You can use the Workable Chrome extension to look up candidates and add them to your Workable account while viewing their social media profiles. Via the extension, you can:
- Search candidates in your Candidates page
- Search Workable Job board candidate profiles
- Source LinkedIn candidate profiles directly from LinkedIn
Installing the Workable Chrome Extension
To install the Workable Chrome Extension, you’ll need to follow the below steps, depending on your browser:
Chrome
If you're using the Chrome web browser, you can install the extension in two easy steps:
- Visit the Workable extension page on the Chrome Web Store
- Click the Add to Chrome button at the top right of the page and connect with your Gmail account if requested
Microsoft Edge
Extensions designed for Google Chrome can also be used in Microsoft Edge.
- In Microsoft Edge, go to the Chrome Web Store
- Select 'Allow extensions from other stores' in the banner at the top of the page, then select Allow to confirm
- Select the Workable extension and click 'Add to Chrome'
- Carefully review the permissions required by the extension, and then select 'Add extension' if you wish to proceed
- You'll see a final prompt confirming the extension has been added.
That's it! You’ve installed the Workable Chrome extension! The ‘W’ (for Workable) icon will appear in your browser toolbar.
Using the Workable Extension
The first time you open the extension panel you will be asked to sign in with your Workable credentials (or to create an account). Next, an authorization window will open to allow the extension to access your Workable account.
At the top of the extension panel, you will see four icons:
- Magnifying glass: Use this to reveal the ‘search by name, email, or URL’ option. To narrow your search, add education, location, or company.
- Box/arrow: Click this to read and agree to the terms of use.
- Cog: See your account settings. If you're recruiting at multiple companies, you can switch to a different company.
- Cross/X: Click the ‘X’ icon to close the extension panel.
For most searches (excluding instant lookup from social networks), the extension will return a list of results as a profile preview (see example below).
Profiles can contain multiple points of information, including:
- Name, headline, social media profiles
- Email address and phone number
- Summary, work experience, and education
- Keywords
When viewing a candidate’s profile, rollover social media icons to find extra details, including:
- Latest tweets (example shown below)
- Contributions and activity from GitHub
- Follower numbers, activity, and likes from Dribbble
In the education section, roll over the underlined name of any school, college, or university to reveal a short description of the establishment.
Types of candidate search
Direct search (name, email, or URL)
If you already have the name, email, or social URL of a prospect, search accordingly and add filters such as the prospect’s education, location, or company details. The extension will return a list of possible matches, displayed as profile previews. Click a profile preview to view the full profile.
This type of search is useful when:
- Someone recommends a candidate by name or LinkedIn profile
- You meet a great potential candidate at a networking event
- You see a brilliant prospect speak at a conference or event
Social media sourcing
When browsing a profile on Wellfound, X, GitHub, Dribbble, and Behance, click the ‘W’ icon to open the extension panel and view the prospect's full profile, which shows data gathered from multiple sources.
This type of search is useful when:
- You’re doing a focused talent search for multiple candidates on a specialist site (e.g., GitHub)
- You chance upon a prospect discussed socially (e.g., X)
- You’re browsing the social sites you use every day and discover a great prospect
Context search (right-click search)
When browsing anywhere online (including your web-based email accounts), highlight a name and right-click to open the contextual menu. Choose Workable Extension to open the Chrome extension and search for the prospect automatically. The extension will return a list of possible matches, displayed as profile previews. Click a profile preview to view the full profile.
This type of search is useful when:
- You use a web-based email account, and someone emails you the name of a great prospect
- You come across a potential prospect in an attendee list for an event or meet-up
- You see a prospect mentioned or recommended anywhere online
Candidate data sources
When you run a candidate search via the extension, it will look up the following data sources:
- Your Candidates page
- Workable Job board candidate profiles; these are candidates that have created profiles in Workable’s Job Board and have opted-in to share their profiles with all Workable recruiters
- Publicly available LinkedIn profiles; i.e., publicly available LinkedIn URLs
Candidates available in Workable’s data (Candidates page and Workable job board profiles) will have a “View in Workable” button, while publicly available LinkedIn profiles will have a “View in LinkedIn” button.
Note: Υou will no longer be able to search for candidates using the People Search through the Chrome Extension.
Add candidates to Workable / Download the profile
Important: Sourcing candidates via the extension for confidential jobs is not supported. If you select a confidential job from the list, you will receive an error message.
Sourcing profiles from Workable data:
Once you click the “View in Workable” button, you will be able to view all the details of the profile. At the bottom of every profile, you’ll see a green + button.
Tap this button to reveal a panel where you can add the profile into your Workable account. The candidate’s information will be pulled into your account for the job you choose. Candidates are not notified when you do this. Alternatively, download the full profile as a PDF.
You can also choose to act as a referrer for the candidate and leave a comment, which will be stored in the candidate’s profile once they are added to your account (if you have access to Workable Referrals you'll be directed to the portal to complete the referral).
Sourcing profiles from LinkedIn:
Once you click the “View in LinkedIn” button, you will be redirected to LinkedIn to view the profile there. Depending on a candidate's LinkedIn settings, their email address may not be visible when sourcing. At the bottom of the extension window, you’ll see a button to "View and add to Workable".
Important: This action will consume 1 LinkedIn View. Monthly profile view limits depend on your LinkedIn plan.
